Our moon has phases. These are related to how much sunlight it receives. Therefore, with an average cycle of 29.6 days, it transforms from a thin crescent into a full moon, then wanes and disappears completely, only to be “reborn” in a new cycle.
In Russia, as in the entire Northern Hemisphere, it’s very easy to remember which moon is waxing and which is waning. You can turn the waxing moon into the letter “R” by adding a little line. And the waning moon resembles the letter “C.” If you travel to the Southern Hemisphere, however, everything is the opposite. At the equator, the moon actually “lies on its side” and resembles a cup into which something is about to be poured.
