A Star's Encounter with a Black Hole

The interaction between a star and a black hole depends on the masses of both objects, the distance between them, and their kinetic energy.

If a star is close enough to a black hole, the black hole’s gravitational pull can cause the star to be torn apart. This can result in the star’s matter being absorbed by the black hole, forming an accretion disk around it.

As the black hole accretes matter, intense energy release and radiation occur, creating powerful sources of X-rays and gravitational waves.

If the star is at a sufficiently great distance, the encounter may take the form of a stable binary system, in which the star and the black hole orbit the common center of mass.
