Lenticular clouds over the active stratovolcano Mount Fuji

Lenticular clouds are a fairly rare natural phenomenon. These clouds form on the crests of air waves or between two layers of air.

They remain stationary despite the wind and are usually observed on the leeward side of mountain ranges at altitudes ranging from 2 to 15 kilometers. The appearance of lenticular clouds indicates strong horizontal air currents and high moisture content in the atmosphere.
